Movement and Space

Life is movement!

man in space

All forms of life have a certain kind of motion within itself. The motion may be small, as in a cell, or considerably big as when the heart beats, and when we walk or run. The movement seems microscopic in the DNA molecule, enormous in a storm, and astronomical in our own galaxy’s movement through the Universe. Besides, movement or motion is always associated with more or less space to move  within.

Temperature

All movement also emit some  degrees of heat. The temperature in the void of the universe is almost inversely proportional to its size. Based on Kelvins temperature scale, which starts at absolute zero, (-459.6700ºF) this void is only approximately 3 degrees Kelvin, i.e. minus 270.15 degrees Celsius, and 454.2700º F. We humans are well above the ca. 310.15 degrees Kelvin, or 37 degrees Celsius, that is 98.60 degrees Fahrenheit

Emotions

The concepts of movement and temperature is colloquially transmitted to our emotional life. We are more or less moved by others, things we see, or cultural experiences, and in Latin, emotio just means movement. So when we say that he or she is cold, it originally means that they are moving very slowly emotionally, and that it feels somewhat cold for a bystander.

Being frigid on the other hand, means having minimal sexual appetite. That she is a warm human being, on the contrary, makes most of us believe that she is caring, empathic and loving. To be “hot” nowadays, means being exactly the opposite of frigid again. At least in English and Norwegian “hot” “heit”, means to be sexually attractive.

Small and big psychological and social movements.

When you overcome your inhibiting anxiety for something, or make your way through, and out of grief and depression, that’s a big and important individual step for you.

For bankers, or financial specialists or acrobats, a psychologically nervous market after a big upsurge, may cause a mass movement of selling bonds and shares, with a big drop, in market value as a result.

Because of a sudden political change in a country, a dangerous psychological fear of losing money, may eventually cause a domino movement of collapse both in the financial, political and social world. Today, the world market is shivering from the political mass movement that resulted in Brexit, Britain out of EU.

The need for speed everywhere, except on aging

Movement is usually linked to concepts like fast or slow, quick or sluggish. In the modern, post-modern and digital world speed is a keyword, and slavedriver. Everything should preferably go very fast, or faster than fastest,- apart from our own aging!

Into the tridimensional Space of Mind and Nature.

walking in nature

The content of the above paragraphs, is probably very well represented in your thinking already. That means you have a kind of spiritual or psychological space in your mind to arrange and transform concepts and thoughts.

The wonderful experience of walking in the woods or through an interesting landscape, and perceive and sense almost every part of it, bushes, creeks, trees, hills, animals and then again, experiencing the totality of the landscape. In the woods or in the mountains, however, you cannot rearrange the scenery, or remove hilltops without being arrested or sued for environmental crime.

But in your mind you can make whatever change you like of this scenery, and with your language even construct stories of action, phantasy, romance and horror within the same locations. And all this you can do with your own personal invented gallery of characters.

the-mind

Yes, with your mind and psychological space active, you can even survive imprisonment for 27 years, without being ruined mentally, and be elected president after your release, as did Nelson Mandela. His psychological universe did not collapse into a black hole of bitterness and revenge! It transformed to a bright light emanating compassion, wisdom, political will, and vigor! Some would also say he never lost contact with his power of love.

My assumption is that love can expand the psychological space inside and around you, and make it possible for you to live in a troubled world, without being totally corrupted and brutalized.

Protecting the Americans?

courtesy-urbanertslings_com_The American Weapon – Boomerang.

If I lived in the US now, I certainly would prefer to buy me a gun before going to town. Perhaps not if I lived in the Portland, Oregon region, witch, referring to statistics, have the lowest homicide rate, 1.4 killed per100.000, out of 48 US metropolitan areas.

If, however I had to move to the charming New Orleans area, with 19 killed per 100.000, I most likely would run to the weapon store immediately. Here I would buy me a half automatic AR-15, and barricade me and my family inside our little house. Sorry for being a bit paranoid but I follow the news daily.

For a Scandinavian there seems to be a locking paradox embedded in the discussion around Civil Rights, weapon and weapon control in the US. On the News, daily you definitely get the impression that life is very dangerous in America. And on the individual level you surely want to protect yourself and your family.

On the societal level, however we know that easy access to alcohol, drugs, and dope rises the rate of problems, accidents, and disease followed by widespread use of these substances. But what then about having a policy giving easy access to weapons to protect yourself. Does this enhance the rate of killings too?

Like alcohol, drugs and dope, this is a many faceted and complex problem.7254700

Research and statistics gives us a direction

There are nearly 12,000 gun murders a year in the U.S. – and despite falling crime rates, that number has barely changed since the late 1990s. (The US Center for Disease Control)

The overall homicide rate, among the metro areas whose principal city is in a state that requires some form of permit to purchase a gun, is 4.32 per 100,000 residents, compared with 5.74 among cities in no-permit states. This certainly does not confirm the gun control = higher violent crime hypothesis. Quite the opposite! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-h-bailey/does-gun-control-encourage-crime_b_7917684.html

Are there any solutions to this dilemma,- between hardcore statistics and the individual feeling  of protection ?

We must start admitting that: The bullet we use in our guns to protect ourselves can ricochet, and even turn back on us like a boomerang.

To save precious American lives we must start gradual weapon control all over the country. And weapon amnesty and refunding for the most dangerous types of weapon. Perhaps then, we can avoid Columbine, Sandy- Hook and Orlando mass murders on repeat!
